Pear tree - Pyrus communis.

Description

The pear tree is a fruit tree of the Rosaceae family, prized for its delicious pears. Native to Europe and Asia, its leaves are green and turn golden in autumn before falling. In spring, its white or pink flowers fill the air with their sweet fragrance.

  • Scientific name: Pyrus communis.
  • Leaf: Deciduous
  • Curiosities: Most pear trees need another tree of a compatible variety to pollinate and bear fruit. This means that different varieties of pear trees are often planted nearby to ensure good pollination. Pears are a good source of fibre, vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants, making them a healthy choice in the diet.

    Care

    • Temperature: Although pear trees can tolerate some variability in temperature, a temperate climate, without extremes of heat or cold, is ideal for their growth. They can withstand temperatures close to 0°C and even temperatures slightly below freezing, which allows them to enter a dormancy period necessary for growth and future fruit production.
    • Light: In general, it prefers to be exposed to full sun for most of the day. It requires full sun for at least 6 hours a day for optimal development and adequate fruit production. Pear trees that receive sufficient sunlight tend to have sweeter, more colourful and well-developed fruit.
    • Watering: It needs regular watering during its active growing season, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. In autumn, watering can be gradually reduced, adapting to the climatic conditions.
    • Manuring: It requires a balanced and adequate fertiliser to provide the necessary nutrients for its growth and fruit production with a fruit tree fertiliser. Especially in spring and summer.
    • Transplanting: If you wish to grow it in pots, it is recommended to transplant the pear tree to a larger pot every few years to prevent its roots from becoming too tight and restricting its growth. If transplanting is not desired, growth should be controlled by pruning.

    Please note

      .
    • Pear tree pruning is preferably carried out during winter, when the tree is in its dormancy period, to remove dead, diseased or crossed branches, and to encourage healthier growth and better fruit production.
    • The pear tree can face challenges due to various pests, such as aphids, grubs and fungi, so it is essential to regularly monitor the tree, apply preventative treatments and use appropriate control methods to protect its health and productivity.

    Available sizes

    Total height (cm) 100 - 120
    Pot diameter (cm) 22

    * The size indicated is indicative. It is an approximate height calculated by averaging the height of several specimens. As living beings, each plant has its own shape and growth rate and, therefore, the measurement cannot be taken as exact.

    * Some plants that have flowers and/or fruits may not have them at the time of purchase. Since flowering, fruit production and even foliage production is seasonal, it may be the case that the time of purchase does not coincide with these flowering or fruiting periods, which does not imply that the plant has a defect or deficiency.
